The heat value that your item starts at is determined by your Maximum heat value as well as your current Smithing level. This is because the heat of your item greatly influences how fast you can smith an item. When smithing items, you may have noticed that as your heat level decreases, that it seems to be taking longer to create your item. This mechanic is only available to those at level 10 Smithing or higher. Note that Forges are found near most, if not all, anvils in game. Leaving an anvil and returning later will not affect any of your progress unless you have visited a Heat forge before returning. Hitting an anvil with an Unfinished smithing item in your inventory will cause you to automatically return to building that project.
